Dr. Gilbert C. Sigua, a former faculty member from the College of Agriculture, CLSU, now a Research Soil Scientist at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Coastal Plains Soil, Water and Plant Research Center in Florence, South Carolina, USA, has been awarded fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through their “Balik Scientist Program”. Dr. Annie Melinda Paz-Alberto, Director of the Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) serves as his host faculty/scientist during his stay in the university from January 26 to February 26, 2015.
Dr.Sigua is recognized worldwide for his work on animal agriculture and the environment and water quality management research as evidenced by his various international projects in Brazil (animal agriculture and water quality), Philippines (phytoremediation) and Japan (grass-legumes ecology). He was recently awarded with a Fellow of American Society of America. His scholarly achievements, expertise, contributions, impact, and stature among peers and scientific community have been widely recognized through numerous national and international invitations, appointments, honors, and international awards.
He was the Lead Scientist of the CRIS research project that integrates the environment, plant and animal genetic resources into a sustainable beef-cattle agro-ecosystem for the subtropical United States and assesses management practices that reduce nutrient loadings to water supplies and increase water and nutrient use efficiency. The immediate beneficiaries of his research are the forage and livestock producers in the Southern US. The general public will continue to receive an adequate supply of affordable, high quality animal protein as a result of enhanced efficiency of beef production in an environmentally sustainable environment.
While in the university, Dr.Sigua will give lectures on advances in water quality testing and sampling, impacts of animal agriculture on the environment, water and nutrient efficiency in agriculture, soil health and soil biodiversity, among others. He will also provide technical assistance in the conduct of the research project “Molecular Identification and Green Technology Development of High Valued Plants in Central Luzon”, particularly in the phytoremediation potential of high valued plants for heavy metal absorption.This project is being funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) and it is one of the components of a program research “Integrated Research and Development Program on Biodiversity Assessment and Conservation of Selected Forest Ecosystems in Central Luzon” under the leadership of Dr. Annie Melinda Paz-Alberto as the Program Leader and Dr. Ronaldo T. Alberto as the Project Leader.
