Central Luzon State University - College of Fisheries (CLSU-CF) conducted a webinar on “Development of Selective Breeding Programs for Aquaculture: Transforming Theory into Application,” last May 14, 2021, with Dr. Curtis E. Lind, a Senior Research Scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Organization (CSIRO), served as a Guest Lecturer.

In his presentation, Dr. Lind emphasized that “applied fish breeding is a multidisciplinary field. It is not just about understanding genetic principles and theory but rather involves several disciplines such as genetics, statistics, husbandry, data and human resource management, consultation, sustainability, and welfare.”

He also mentioned that “whatever breeding program to follow, keep in mind that the sustainable use of animal genetic resources can help maintain their diversity.”

Around 180 participants attended the webinar composed of researchers and faculty members from different state colleges and universities, aquaculturists from the government and private institutions, students, and international colleagues from Thailand and Indonesia.

The long years of research collaboration between WorldFish in Penang, Malaysia, where Dr. Lind previously worked, and CLSU-CF through Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Acting Dean of CF, paved the way for the successful conduct of this international webinar on selective breeding programs in aquaculture.
