CLSU-CF Conducts Lake Assessment in Bayambang, Pangasinan

Oct. 24, 2023

Ravelina R. Velasco | SCO

The Central Luzon State University – College of Fisheries conducted an assessment in Langiran Lake, Bayambang, Pangasinan last October 19, 2022 with the aim to provide baseline information on the current physicochemical and biological properties of the lake that can be utilized by the different agency in determining appropriate management strategies to maintain ecological equilibrium and prevent irreversible consequences.   With the assistance of the Municipal Agriculture Office and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council together with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – National Fisheries Development Center (BFAR-NFDC), students of Doctor of Philosophy in Aquaculture who are enrolled in the Biological Productivity of the Aquatic Ecosystem course successfully monitored the water quality parameters such as water depth, Secchi disc visibility, turbidity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and salinity in-situ.   Meanwhile, other parameters such as total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, total phosphate, chlorophyll-a, total coliform and plankton composition were done at the BFAR-NFDC-Water Quality Laboratory in Dagupan City, Pangasinan.   The results were presented during the webinar held on December 9, 2022 via Zoom platform which was participated by graduate and undergraduate students, including Ms. Zyra Orpiano, Municipal Agriculture Officer of Bayambang, Mr. Gerard S. Carungay, Barangay Captain of Langiran, and Mr. Marlon Castillo, the aquaculture technician and in-charge of the tilapia hatchery project of the town.   The webinar served as an avenue of opportunity for the stakeholders to identify strategies to elevate the status of the lake and explore potential prospects as the researchers presented a success story of Sumlang Lake, a small lake in Camalig, Albay.   This initiative received positive feedback from the representatives of LGU-Bayamabang as this provides a better perspective on managing Langiran Lake and a collaborative project with CLSU was anticipated.   “We are truly grateful with the undertaking made by the CLSU and College of Fisheries students. These findings will help us a lot in refocusing the priorities of LGU with regard to the development of the lake as an aquapark,” said Ms. Orpiano.
