CLSU Techno Village Dev’t Program Expands Partnership with New LGU and Farmer Partners

Solidifying the impact of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) to the community through the Technology Village Development Program (TVDP), the municipalities of Lupao and Aliaga, Nueva Ecija along with six farmer partners signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) today, May 21 at the OVPAA Amphitheater for the establishment of TVP in their respective municipalities expanding the reach of the program to 17 barangays in 7 municipalities within the province. Dr. Edgar A. Orden, VP for Research and Extension who initiated the TVDP emphasized that the expansion of the program shows the commitment of CLSU being a state-funded institution, to generate technologies not only for research but to uplift the lives in the community. The MOA signing was led by University President, Dr. Evaristo A. Abella and the representatives of the Municipal Mayors of Lupao and Aliaga witnessed by technology experts from different specialized R&D Centers along with the faculty and staff under the University Extension Program Office. “I would like to thank everyone present here today, you have made this event possible which formalizes and further strengthen our partnership with our partners. This is our way forward, to uplift the lives in the community and serve as its enabling partner. We commit that CLSU will continue to pursue this endeavor to cater the needs and interest of all our technology takers,” said President Abella. Most Rev. Bishop Roberto C. Mallari from the Diocese of San Jose, Nueva Ecija was also present signifying their interest to the TVDP, along with other representatives from the different partner municipalities. To date, CLSU is in partnership with the Municipality of Guimba, Cuyapo, Talavera, Zaragosa and the Science City of Munoz in the implementation of TVPD benefitting a total of 106 farmer partners.

SCUAA III 2024 OPENING PROGRAM

The State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Regional Athletic Meet formally opens today, May 19 with a theme “Region III in Solidarity: Igniting the Champion Spirit in Us” at the Tarlac Agricultural University, with more than 4,000 participating student athletes and officials from different State Universities and Colleges (SUC) in Central Luzon. Among the participants are the 340-strong Green Cobras of Central Luzon State University, led by University President, Dr. Evaristo A. Abella represented by Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Karenina B. Romualdo, Vice President for Business Affairs, and Prof. John A. Agaton, head of the Sports Development Office. Other delegates vying for the title are from the Aurora State College of Technologies, Bataan Peninsula State University, Bulacan Agricultural State College, Bulacan State University, Don Honorio Ventura State University, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Pampanga State Agricultural University, Philippine Merchant Marine Academy, Philippine State College of Aeronautics, President Ramon Magsaysay State University, Tarlac State University, and the host, Tarlac Agricultural University. The sports event will feature individual and team events which will be played until May 24.

CLSU Sends-off Green Cobras for SCUAA III Athletic Meet

Boosting the morale of the student athletes, Central Luzon State University (CLSU) officials and staff led by University President Dr. Evaristo A. Abella held a send-off ceremony to the 298 ‘Green Cobras’ who will represent the university to the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) on May 19-24, 2024 hosted by Tarlac Agricultural University. “Compete, do your best and represent CLSU with integrity and respect to your opponents, officials and to the rules of the games,” said President Abella. The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Sports Development Office headed by Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco and Prof. John A. Agaton, respectively, organized the 310-strong delegation composed of 298 student-athletes supported by 42 coaches and trainers. USHS, OVPRE Stage the 1st HYPE Congress to Showcase Senior HS Research Outputs

The University Science High School (USHS) and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension (OVPRE) mounted the first High School Youth for Purposeful Engagement in STEAM R&D (HYPE) Congress 2024 participated by USHS Senior High School students who presented their research outputs through paper and poster presentations last May 14, 2024 at the R&E Amphitheater. With the theme “STEAM Research, Innovation and Development for All Genders: Breaking Barriers and Exploring Opportunities Through Purposeful R&D Engagements,” the congress funded by the University Gender and Development Office (UGADO) provided the students a platform to present their gender-responsive research outputs to a panel of evaluators with their junior counterpart as audience, and their families and friends who watched via Facebook livestreaming. Dr. Edgar A. Orden, Vice President for Research and Extension, initiated the event and warmly welcomed the participants. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the purpose of the congress, highlighting that CLSU, recognized as one of the leading higher education institutions in research and development in the country, is committed to providing an enabling environment for its students. This commitment aims to ensure that students are well-prepared and globally competent. Meanwhile, Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered an inspirational message on behalf of Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, University President. As an alumna of the school, VP Velasco shared her personal reflections and encouraged the participants to always strive for excellence. “You are not just presenting the data; you are presenting a piece of yourself. It is not the size of the thing that you have done but the magnitude of your passion and the depth of your inquiry. Ultimately, it is about making a meaningful contribution to the collective wisdom of humankind,” said VP Velasco. Gracing the event as the keynote speaker, Dr. Danilo S. Vargas, former CLSU Vice President for Administration and current President of CORE Gateway College Inc., addressed the students and expounded on the value of interdisciplinary learning and collaboration in advancing research and innovation. “The more we understand and appreciate different fields, the more we can contribute to the growth and development. This is where interdisciplinary learning and collaboration come. Serving as light blood of advancing research and innovation in STEAM research and other fields, it is through collective efforts that we can truly make a difference,” Dr. Vargas explained. Also in attendance were Dr. Verjun J. Dilla, Head of CLSU Laboratory for Teaching and Learning (CLTL), Dr. Aileen G. de Guzman, Sub-unit in-charge of CLTL-USHS along with the faculty and staff. The Grade 12 students presented their capstone research papers: 7 in the Basic Science; 8 in Applied Science; and 5 in Social Science Category, while the Grade 11 students presented their research through a poster presentation. CLSU faculty and researchers served as panel evaluators who determined the winners from each category. CASS Faculty and PMS Director Receives Full Grant from SEARCA for Leadership Development Program

Assoc. Prof. Maria Adrielle S. Estigoy, College of Arts and Social Sciences faculty and Presidential Management Services director, was one of the ten selected grantees of a full grant from the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the The Head Foundation (THF) for the 2024 Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Institutions (LDP-HEIs). The program was participated by 28 individuals from 11 Southeast Asian countries composed of HEI presidents, vice presidents, deans, directors, and heads, among others. It runs from March to July 2024 in a blended learning mode. As an output, Assoc. Prof. Estigoy and respective participants crafted their re-entry action plan (REAP) where they can implement in their own institutions. In particular, her REAP presentation was anchored on the concept of possible institutionalization of a policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in teaching and learning. To ensure that the REAP of participants were on track, their presentation were critiqued by a panel of faculty lecturers from THF which took place last May 6-10, 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. As part of the LDP-HEI program, participants had the invaluable opportunity to visit Betagro, a company renowned for its innovative practices, as well as prestigious state-owned universities such as Chulalongkorn University and Kasetsart University (KU). These visits were designed to provide real-life best practices and innovations presented by Betagro CEO and KU president, enriching the participants' understanding and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Now in its sixth series, the LDP-HEI by SEARCA and THF aims to empower leaders of HEIs in Southeast Asia by equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge required to lead their universities effectively, ensuring they thrive and remain resilient in the dynamic landscape of the region.

Nat’l Innovation Council Member Explores CLSU Innovations for Future Collaboration

Recognizing the innovations and research endeavors of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Dr. Ria Liza C. Canlas, Executive Member of the National Innovation Council (NIC) visited CLSU and met with the officials and faculty researchers for potential collaborations on May 8, 2024. Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, University President, welcomed Dr. Canlas and her team and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to partner with NIC enabling CLSU researchers to showcase their innovations and amplify its impact not only to the local community but to the whole country. Also present in the meeting are Dr. Edgar A. Orden, VP for Research and Extension, Dr. Jonathan V. Fabula, concurrent Director, University Research Program Office and Precision and Digital Agriculture Center, along with Freshwater Aquaculture Center Director, Dr. Karl Marx A. Quiazon, Center for Renewable Energy and Technology Director, Dr. Wendy C. Mateo, and Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management Head, Dr. Gella Patria L. Abella. After hearing all the innovative products like the Tilading, Tilapia Ice Cream, and initiatives on precision and digital agriculture, and use of renewable energy in agriculture, Dr. Canlas expressed her interest in collaborating with CLSU which will push the agenda of the government through the NIC in establishing a dynamic innovation ecosystem in the country. The NIC consists of 25 members, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as the Chairperson and NEDA Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan as the Vice-Chairperson is responsible for the implementation of the National Innovation Agenda and Strategies for 2023-2032.

CLSU Inks MOA with Korean Smart Farm for Ginseng Cultivation

Central Luzon State University (CLSU) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Korean Smart Farm Co. Ltd. together with Saemaeul Agricultural Production & Marketing Corporation (SAPAMCO) for a collaborative project entitled “Indoor Hydroponic Ginseng Cultivation, Food Product Development, and Technology Dissemination” on May 7, 2024. Dr. Edgar A. Orden, Vice President for Research and Extension, and Dr. Ariel G. Mactal, Vice President for Administration led the MOA signing ceremony along with Mr. Jin Yong Hwang, President of Korean Smart Farm Co. Ltd. and Mr. Jeong Taek Lee, President of SAPAMCO. Meanwhile, Dr. Jonathan V. Fabula, concurrent Director of the University Research Program Office and Precision and Digital Agriculture Center will lead the three-year project which aims to introduce the production, processing, and commercialization of ginseng as a high-value commodity that can provide a potential source of income to local farmers. The collaboration will harness the strengths of both parties in terms of expertise and capabilities to develop products such as tea, supplement drinks, and skincare products using ginseng as its main ingredient.
