Vince Archie M. Collado, a junior Bachelor of Science in Textile and Fashion Technology (BSTFT) student majoring in Fashion Design of the College of Home Science and Industry (CHSI) won first place in the 2024 Digital Art Contest – College Category during the 1st National Textile Convention hosted by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on January 30-31, 2024.
Among the 250 entries from various colleges and universities in the Philippines, four entries from Central Luzon State University (CLSU) were shortlisted and made it to the top 10 with Collado’s work emerging as the best. His design emphasized the significance of Philippine textiles as part of the culture, history and skills being passed on from one generation to another.
He described his creation as “Pamana: Sinulid ng Kahapon, Pinapagtibay Hanggang Ngayon” with the following description:
The threads of culture, history, and skills are intricately woven into the fabric of Philippine textiles. This rich tapestry extends from precolonial times through the industrial revolution and persists in the present era with ongoing research and emerging technologies.
From harnessing the strength of abaca fibers to the innovative use of bamboo in textile production, the Philippines' textile industry has demonstrated its enduring potential across centuries.
As illustrated in the poster, the expertise of Filipino artisans continues to evolve, propelled by relentless innovation in textile production. This steadfast commitment to improvement has cultivated a supportive network and shared resources, contributing not only to economic stability but also nurturing a profound sense of community and the preservation of cultural roots.
The rich heritage woven from nature's gifts and the threads of skills honed over centuries unequivocally affirm the immense potential of Philippine textiles today and in the future.”
Together with Ms. Ma. Rheena Carla Francia, CHSI faculty, the CLSU students were able to join the competition along with other entries from Camarines Norte State College, University of the Cordilleras, Siliman University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Batangas State University, Mapua Malayan Colleges Laguna, City College of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, and Immaculate Conception Major Seminary.
According to Dr. Celyrah B. Castillo, Acting Dean of CHSI, this feat was inspired by the strong determination of the previous and present administration which supports student and faculty advancement.
“With a conducive learning and working environment, surely, we could expect more of these successes in the future from our students and faculty,” Dr. Castillo added.
The 1st National Textile Convention or “TELACon” which centers on sustainable practices and technological innovations in textile science is one of the different activities lined up in celebration of the 2024 Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Month.
