Int’l Collab Fuels Tilapia Vaccine Breakthrough

Dr. Alvin T. Reyes, a faculty researcher at the College of Fisheries (CoF) and the Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC), has achieved a significant breakthrough in aquaculture by developing an inactivated vaccine formulated with hydrogen peroxide to prevent major bacterial pathogens that threaten red Nile tilapia production. The bacterial pathogen called Streptococcus agalactiae poses a serious threat to large-scale tilapia aquaculture operations in the ASEAN region, resulting in substantial economic losses. Collaborating with Dr. Chanagun Chitmanat, a senior researcher at Maejo University, Dr. Reyes has introduced a practical and effective approach to enhancing fish health and sustainability in aquaculture. The vaccine has been tested on experimental fish, and while the final study results are still pending, initial observations indicate promising efficacy in protecting against bacterial infection. Dr. Reyes expressed optimism, stating, “We are hopeful for positive results, even though the final study results are still being processed.” The collaboration between Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and Maejo University was crucial in the vaccine’s development. Access to Maejo University's advanced laboratories and research methods significantly aided in the rigorous testing and refinement of the vaccine. TESO Continues CAT Promotion Through Pencil Donation Drive

Passed from the hands of hopeful dreamers to the hands of young learners, the Testing and Evaluation Services Office (TESO) continues its promotion of the CLSU Admission Test (CAT) while extending support to the primary learners of the DepEd-CLSU Elementary Laboratory School through a Pencil Donation Drive themed “Ang Lapis Mo, Ang Susulat sa mga Pangarap Ko” on September 28, 2026. University President Dr. Evaristo A. Abella led the distribution of 1,300 pencils to 600 pupils, alongside Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Head of the Testing and Evaluation Center Dr. Elmer D. Dela Rosa, and School Principal Jocelyn De Guzman. The Pencil Donation Drive forms part of the CAT promotion campaign and was made possible through the contributions of examinees who took the previous CAT.

CLSU, Soroptimist International Launch ATE GOES AGRI Scholarship for Female Agriculture Students

Central Luzon State University (CLSU), through its Office of Student Affairs (OSA), officially inked a Memorandum of Agreement with Soroptimist International of Metro Manila Northwest District to establish the ATE GOES AGRI Scholarship Program: Advancing Growth, Resilience, and Inclusion through Education. The MOA signing was led by University President Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, Dr. OSA Dean Irene G. Bustos, and District Director Ms. Jennifer Joan Bayot. The event was witnessed by Ms. Josephine D. Cariño. The educational assistance program empowers financially disadvantaged young women pursuing agriculture degrees by building their technical and leadership skills to prepare them for careers in sustainable agriculture, food security, and community development. This partnership will benefit five qualified female students from the CLSU College of Agriculture who demonstrate financial need. Each scholar will receive a PHP20,000 stipend for the academic year. The CLSU-OSA will facilitate the program's implementation, tasked with screening applicants, verifying academic status, monitoring scholars, and managing progress reports. This new partnership underscores a shared commitment to breaking financial barriers for women in agriculture, equipping the next generation of female leaders to drive innovation in their communities.
