SUNFLOWER BLOOMS ANEW AT CLSU

Dec. 10, 2021

Jomar S. Garabiles | PAO

“Let sunflower blooms again here in CLSU” said President Tereso A. Abella two years ago. In response, the Research Extension and Training (RET) program thru the initiatives of the Research Office put up a 4000m2 Sunflower Garden in the vicinity of the new RET Complex along the Research Avenue. This is the second year of sunflower blooms in CLSU.       Looking back, it was in the early 70’s during the presidency of Dr. Amado C. Campos and research leadership of Dr. Filomena F. Campos when CLSU started its Sunflower Research and Development (R&D) Project with funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) formerly the National Science Development Board (NSDB). As an output was the development of a sunflower variety, named CLSUN.       Despite earlier efforts, the enthusiasm to continue R&D on sunflower in CLSU slowly vanished. But now is the time to revive and showcase sunflower production and R&D in the university.       According to Dr. Maria Excelsis M. Orden, Director for Research and Dr. Mario B. Agustin, Chief of Special Projects Division, series of studies/activities will be conducted under the leadership of Mr. Marcial A. Gonzales, the office’ breeder to further improve sunflower production. Among the future activities are seed selection, hybridization and development of new sunflower variety.     Sunflower was planted anew last December 2017. Since then, it has gone viral thru facebook and other social networking sites. Hundreds of students, employees and guests from various places are visiting the sunflower garden to take selfies/groupies, and to experience the positive vibes and relaxing ambiance amidst the beautiful yellow sunflowers.        “Very romantic, nakakakilig lalo na pag kasama mo ang mahal mo!” shared by Mr. Harvey James Paguilian, 20 years old from Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija during an ambush interview. He added that it was already his fourth time to visit the garden together with his girlfriend, and they continue to be fascinated by the beauty of the flowers.       “Instagrammable! Para kang dinadala sa ibang mundo, masarap ang hangin, nakaka-relax at talagang malilimutan mo ang problema mo” stated by Mr. Prince Partacalao, 20 years old from San Jose City.       “Very strategic yung area, kasi along the highway yung garden kaya halos lahat ng dumaraan ay talagang napapalingon” uttered by Mr. Wowie De Guzman, 27 years old, faculty of the Department of Psychology, CLSU.       “Perfect for taking pre-nup photos” according to the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Gesmundo Paez of Cabanatuan City, during their photoshoot at the sunflower garden.               The Research Office assures the continued production of sunflower to serve as its agri-tourism site not only in CLSU but in the whole Central Luzon. The office also promises to produce more sunflower to create beauty within CLSU, and to provide background for selfies/groupies.

Korean University to Establish Sejong Institute at CLSU

Central Luzon State University (CLSU) continues to strengthen its internationalization efforts with a landmark visit by officials from Sunchon National University (SCNU), Korea, from January 12 to 14, 2025. This visit marks a pivotal milestone in the partnership between CLSU and SCNU, solidified through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). A key initiative of this collaboration is the potential establishment of the Sejong Institute at CLSU, envisioned as a hub for Korean language education for students and employees. Once realized, this initiative will position CLSU among the select institutions in the Philippines hosting Sejong Institutes, joining the ranks of those in Iloilo, Cebu, and Balanga City. The SCNU delegation, headed by Prof. Ki Chang Nam, Vice President for Academic Affairs, visited CLSU to explore its facilities, assess potential sites for the Sejong Institute, and engage in discussions to further solidify plans for the collaboration. Accompanying him were Prof. Kang Seok Seo from the Department of Animal Resources Science, Prof. Ji-Hyun Kim from the Department of International Korean Language Education, and Dr. Lovelia Mamuad, an alumnus of CLSU who is now based in Korea. CLSU Equips OFW families in Nueva Ecija with Skills on Organic Farming

Families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Nueva Ecija took a meaningful step toward sustainable living and entrepreneurial growth by participating in a two-day training on organic farming, hosted by Central Luzon State University (CLSU) on December 6-7, 2024. The event, titled “Embracing the OFW Entrepreneurial Spirit,” equipped participants with practical knowledge in organic agriculture while nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset. A joint effort of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 3 and CLSU’s Holistic OFW Program for Empowerment (HOPE), the training opened with an inspiring call to action from Prof. Janet O. Saturno, HOPE Project Leader, encouraging attendees to actively immerse themselves in the learning sessions. Day one featured expert-led lectures designed to build foundational skills: Dr. Carolyn P. Gonzales-Marzan shared financial planning strategies tailored to entrepreneurial ventures; Dr. Irene G. Bustos focused on fostering a positive entrepreneurial mindset; Mr. Sherwin B. Celestino motivated participants to adopt a business-oriented perspective; Mr. Ronn Adam V. Pontoy and Ms. Ellen S. Romero introduced the essentials of organic farming, emphasizing sustainable vegetable production and composting techniques. On the second day, participants engaged in hands-on activities, transitioning theory into practice. Guided demonstrations provided them with real-world experience in organic farming processes, ensuring a deeper understanding of the methods taught. Simultaneously, the Center for Tropical Mushroom Research and Development hosted the second batch of its Intensive Training on Mushroom and Spawn Production (Mushroom Pharming). This parallel initiative further enhanced the livelihood options available to OFW families. This collaborative effort reflects the shared vision of OWWA Region 3 and CLSU to empower OFW families through sustainable and entrepreneurial opportunities. By building economic resilience and promoting sustainable agriculture, the partnership continues to strengthen the capacities of OFW communities to thrive.
