The College of Fisheries (CF) in collaboration with GenoMar Philippines conducted a hybrid seminar on innovative tilapia breeding technology catering students, researchers, faculty and staff last May 5, 2023, at the CF-FAC Conference Hall.
GenoMar Philippines was represented by Ms. Thea Luz Pineda, Breeding Manager of the East Asia Pacific, and two Senior Researchers from GenoMar Genetics, Norway, served as resource persons namely; Dr. Rajesh Joshi, who contributed to the development of the first Single Nucleotide Polymorphism-chip array for tilapia, and Dr. Skaarud Anders, whose specialization is controlling inbreeding and optimizing breeding schemes in fish.
A total of 136 participants from Thailand, Peru, Nigeria, Mexico City, Morocco, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Chile, Belgium, Australia, and the Philippines attended the seminar online, while 120 in-person participants attended the event comprised of students, researchers, aquaculturists, aquaculture technicians, instructors, professors, and senior scientists from different research centers and academia.
GenoMar Genetics group is a long-time research partner of CLSU and has pioneered in the implementation of innovative breeding technologies in Nile tilapia by choosing the best-performing individuals for a more profitable and sustainable tilapia industry. The transition of different selection goals and methods was highlighted from family-based selection, using DNA information and genomic selection.
