COS Intensifies Research and Extension Activities, Signs Partnership with Local and International Collaborators

The College of Science (COS) through the initiatives of the Department of Math and Physics and the Department of Chemistry, intensified its collaboration with various institutions for research partnership and extension activity on September 26, 2024. The Department of Chemistry’s Computational Chemistry Laboratory signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with New Mexico State University's (NMSU) - Gold Research Laboratory to create a dynamic academic environment that promotes interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange in computational chemistry. University President Dr. Evaristo A. Abella led the signing ceremony together with Dr. Angeles M. De Leon, Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Mark Aldren M. Feliciano, Head of the Computational Chemistry Laboratory, reciprocating the signatures of their counterpart, Dr. Brian Gold, Leader of the Gold Research Laboratory, and Ms. Rita Parra, Research Administrator. On the other hand, the Department of Math and Physics (DMP) expanded their existing partnership to the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of San Jose City, Nueva Ecija through the formal signing of a supplemental Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). This initiative focuses on improving their skills in action research writing and equipping them to conduct meaningful educational studies. During the signing ceremony, Dr. Josie C. Palioc, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, represented Dr. Ericson S. Sabacan, DepEd Schools Division Superintendent. Also present were Dr. John Rafael M. Antalan, Department Head of DMP, and Dr. Hazel G. Diaz, project leader, along with witnesses Mr. Vismark T. Manuel, Ms. Diwata D. Duran, Mr. Allan Santos, and Mr. Moses Gil Honorio. CLSU, Japanese Institutions Address Key Issues in Banana and Cacao at Int’l Forum

The Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and Tamagawa University (TU) of Japan, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), tackled key issues and concerns in banana and cacao production, with a focus on disease management, during an International Forum held today, September 27, 2024, at the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) in Quezon City. The event brought together various stakeholders from the industry to discuss challenges and solutions. Dubbed as the 1st International Stakeholders’ Forum of Banana and Cacao Diseases Management (BaCaDM) in the Philippines, Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, CLSU President and BaCaDM Project Director, delivered an opening message recognizing the crucial roles of all stakeholders involved in this JICA-funded project. In his speech, President Abella emphasized the vital importance of active participation and commitment from all stakeholders to achieve the project's objectives. He assured the attendees that CLSU remains fully committed to supporting the initiative, aiming to benefit not only the banana and cacao industries but also the workers and consumers who rely on them. “CLSU will stay committed to innovative efforts in agricultural research and development and in harnessing our international linkages for programs and projects like this that will benefit the people not only in our local communities but all over the world,” said Dr. Abella. The forum was attended by researchers from CLSU and TU, representatives from JICA, Officers from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, banana and cacao producers, and importers group, as well as the heads of agencies under DA-led by Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr., represented by DA-BPI Director, Dr. Glenn Gerard Panganiban. Also present were Dr. Ariel G. Mactal, VP for Administration and Deputy Project Director, Dr. Parsons N. Hail, Project Manager along with the Project leaders and staff Dr. Elaida R. Fiegalan, Dr. Garry Benico, and Dr. Jay C. Santos.

CLSU Intensifies Drive for a Rabies-Free Community

To maintain a rabies-free community inside the campus, the College of Veterinary Science and Medicine (CVSM), in collaboration with the City of Veterinary Office of the Science City of Muñoz, organized a three-day event, from September 24-26, 2024, in celebration of World Rabies Day. One of the key highlights of the event was the Rabies Mass Vaccination and Information Drive, which aimed to address the growing need for rabies prevention in the community. As part of this initiative, the CVSM organized a comprehensive seminar series at the CLSU Auditorium designed to deepen the knowledge and awareness of the CLSU community regarding the dangers of rabies. Dr. Noraine P. Medina, Dean of the College of Veterinary Science and Medicine, delivered the welcome address, expressing appreciation to all participants and partner agencies for their dedicated participation in the event. The topics covered in the seminar include the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in Pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis, the Science City of Munoz Anti-Rabies Ordinance, Responsible Pet Ownership, and the Reporting System on Animal Bite Related Cases. On the other hand, the Rabies Mass Vaccination will run from September 25-26 at the College of Veterinary Science and Medicine from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Over 164 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, Faculty and Staff, and CLSU Village residents participated in the seminar and demonstrated enthusiasm for maintaining a rabies-free environment at CLSU. #RabiesFreeCLSU #CVSMandSCM
