CVSM Student Attends Int’l Study Program; Explores Multiculturalism and Social Innovation in Thailand

Michelle Barrera Tumali, a student from the College of Veterinary Science and Medicine (CVSM) at Central Luzon State University (CLSU), participated in a two-week international study program as one of the Filipino delegates in the “ASEAN in Today’s World (AsTW) 2024” from March 11-21 hosted by Mahidol University in Thailand. The program which offers two enriching courses – Multiculturalism in Asia and Social Innovator Incubation co-organized by Kyushu University in Japan with support from the ASEAN Secretariat was attended by 43 students representing 15 universities from six countries, forming a diverse and dynamic group of delegates. Supported by the Young ASEAN Scholarship grant from Kyushu University, Ms. Tumali was able to participate in the program where she explored the aspect of multiculturalism through her final paper and presentation titled “INKscapes of Tattoo Culture: Philippines’ Batek and Indonesia’s Mentawai,” examining historical, cultural, and societal perspectives. In addition, her team developed a social business project for the Social Innovator Incubation course entitled “OPTICONNECT: Clearer Vision for a Brighter Future,” emphasizing the impact of poor eyesight and proposing mobile ophthalmic clinics and services to enhance the quality of life for impoverished families and address the critical need for access to basic healthcare in rural areas. Furthermore, the participants experienced the rich traditions and heritage of Thailand through cultural immersion activities including Thai Herbal Inhaler Class, Traditional Dance Class, Traditional Dessert Making Class, and a Cultural Trip to Ayutthaya Province. Reflecting on her journey, Tumali emphasized the profound impact of shared experiences and collaborative efforts in forging meaningful relationships and shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.

Central Luzon Rises as Overall Champion in 2024 PASUC-NCAF

The Central Luzon Region prevailed as the Overall Champion during the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) National Culture and the Arts Festival (NCAF) proving its prowess in cultural arts held at Philippine Normal University, besting 16 participating regions with delegates coming from 12 member institutions of PASUC-Region 3. Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, CLSU President and Chair of PASUC Region 3, expressed his congratulations to all the participants and coaches for their outstanding performance and excellent display of unity and camaraderie as they represent Region 3. Central Luzon earned a total of 99 points including the points earned by CLSU students who participated in the soprano duet, and short and sweet play dialogue.

CLSU at 117: Championing Inclusivity, Trailblazing Innovation for a Better Community

The Central Luzon State University (CLSU) successfully mounted its 117th Founding Anniversary celebration with events centered on the theme promoting inclusivity and innovations for the community participated in by its stakeholders from April 7-14, 2024. Student-led activities alongside the events prepared by the university provided an array of activities which catered to the varied interests of the participants like the street party, chalk art, mural painting, busking, dance craze, photobooth, color run, quiz bee and debate, gabi ng parangal, and a music festival, making the celebration more meaningful and memorable for everyone. On the other hand, faculty and staff were also treated with wellness activities, free blood chemistry examinations, and competitions promoting camaraderie like the laro ng lahi, basketball cup, and a tennis tournament among partner-agencies within the Science City community. Meanwhile, the KAMALIG Tiendesitas was opened for the faculty and staff to avail the produce of the Techno Village beneficiaries from different partner-barangays while the Kapehan ng OSA, an event where students and University officials meet and discuss the concerns of the students and faculty was also held. In its 117 years of providing an enabling environment to its constituents, new facilities were also launched including the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), College of Science building, the International Studio, and a new Light Bus was blessed as the newest addition to the university vehicle fleet. Expressing his profound gratitude to everyone, University President Dr. Evaristo A. Abella addressed the CLSU community during the special flag raising ceremony held on April 12 and ended his foundation message with the unveiling of the theme and logo of the 60th Universityhood celebration set on June 17-18, 2024. “For more than six decades, we have consistently demonstrated our value to the scientific community and beyond. As we continue to foster a culture of excellence, we look forward to commemorating this momentous occasion and reflecting on our journey of growth and achievement.” Dr. Abella said. Thereafter, the Service Recognition and PRAISE Award where nearly 300 faculty, staff and retirees were honored for their outstanding leadership and dedicated service to the university, followed by the community fiesta which opened the campus cottages for everyone creating a fitting festivity for CLSU’s 117 years of serving the community.

CEN Produces 53 New Civil Engineers; Exceeds Nat’l CELE Passing Rate

The College of Engineering (CEN) graduates represented CLSU well in the recently concluded Civil Engineering Licensure Exam (CELE) administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on April 20-21, 2024 with 53 board passers and 41.73% institutional passing rate. Compared to the 39.26% national passing rate (6,680 out of 17,010), the first-time takers showed a commendable performance as they recorded a 58.33% passing rate while re-examiners obtained a passing rate of 37.86%.
