Five Fisheries students from the College of Fisheries (CF) embarked on an International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) at Kasetsart University (KU) in Thailand to enhance their knowledge and skills in the cultural management of various freshwater and marine fish species from July 4 to August 14, 2023.
The students namely: Joshua Czeasar P. Jimenez, Ellaine Karylle Mae C. Bernabe, Kein R. Galano, Angelica G. Arellano, and Stephen Nathanielle A. Cortez, along with Dr. Alvin T. Reyes, CF faculty and coordinator were welcomed by Associate Professor Dr. Suriyan Thankitjanukit, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, Associate Professor Dr. Wanwimol Klaipradit, Deputy Dean for International Affairs, and Assistant Professor Dr. Sukkrit Nimitkul, Lecturer at the Department of Aquaculture.
During the exchange program, Dr. Reyes was given an opportunity to present his research on the ability of Streptococcus spp., isolated from tilapia grow-out farms, to develop antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in commonly used antibiotics in Pampanga, Philippines. The issue of AMR is considered a global health problem and development threat, and requires urgent multisectoral action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ISEP at KU is a valuable opportunity for the participating students to gain a comprehensive understanding of Thailand's fisheries industry, and to develop cultural exchange and collaborative skills among its institutional partners.
