The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) hosted this year’s Futures Thinking Capacity Building, Scenario Development and Innovation Workshop with the theme “Kanin at Ulam” at the Academic Affairs Amphitheatre and CEN AVR, on May 30-31, 2024. The two-day seminar-workshop commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, VP for Academic Affairs, and an introduction to the workshop's rationale. Mr. Emmanuel R. De Guia, Resident Futurist on the Committee for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Innovation, and Futures Thinking, shared his expertise on strategic planning and foresight, framing the future as a resource speaker. Following his presentation, Ms. Jalaine Joyce V. Malabanan, a Course Specialist at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Institute of Open and Distance Education, delivered a lecture on megatrends, trends, and drivers of change. Meanwhile, a workshop and scenario-building session provided participants with hands-on experience in applying these concepts to a commodity of their choice, focusing on the future of food security, sustainable production, and innovation in the context of staple foods. The first day concluded with insightful remarks from Dr. Angeles M. De Leon, Dean of the College of Science. On the second day, the capacity-building continued with Mr. De Guia discussing causal layered analysis and scenario building. This session was followed by a workshop where participants pitched their outputs, demonstrating their ability to apply the advanced tools and methodologies they had learned. In the afternoon, Ms. Malabanan introduced the Compassionate-Anticipatory Paradigm, a forward-thinking approach that integrates empathy and anticipation in future planning. This was followed by a think-building activity, encouraging participants to incorporate compassion and anticipation into their strategic foresight processes. The combination of expert lectures, interactive workshops, and collaborative activities provided a rich learning experience, equipping the participants with the tools and insights needed in framing the futures of CLSU. The capacity development activity was made possible through the generous support of Senator Pia Cayetano. Her commitment to fostering education and sustainable development provided the necessary resources and backing to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative.
