Central Luzon Rises as Overall Champion in 2024 PASUC-NCAF

The Central Luzon Region prevailed as the Overall Champion during the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) National Culture and the Arts Festival (NCAF) proving its prowess in cultural arts held at Philippine Normal University, besting 16 participating regions with delegates coming from 12 member institutions of PASUC-Region 3. Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, CLSU President and Chair of PASUC Region 3, expressed his congratulations to all the participants and coaches for their outstanding performance and excellent display of unity and camaraderie as they represent Region 3. Central Luzon earned a total of 99 points including the points earned by CLSU students who participated in the soprano duet, and short and sweet play dialogue.

CASS Faculty and PMS Director Receives Full Grant from SEARCA for Leadership Development Program

Assoc. Prof. Maria Adrielle S. Estigoy, College of Arts and Social Sciences faculty and Presidential Management Services director, was one of the ten selected grantees of a full grant from the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the The Head Foundation (THF) for the 2024 Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Institutions (LDP-HEIs). The program was participated by 28 individuals from 11 Southeast Asian countries composed of HEI presidents, vice presidents, deans, directors, and heads, among others. It runs from March to July 2024 in a blended learning mode. As an output, Assoc. Prof. Estigoy and respective participants crafted their re-entry action plan (REAP) where they can implement in their own institutions. In particular, her REAP presentation was anchored on the concept of possible institutionalization of a policy on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in teaching and learning. To ensure that the REAP of participants were on track, their presentation were critiqued by a panel of faculty lecturers from THF which took place last May 6-10, 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. As part of the LDP-HEI program, participants had the invaluable opportunity to visit Betagro, a company renowned for its innovative practices, as well as prestigious state-owned universities such as Chulalongkorn University and Kasetsart University (KU). These visits were designed to provide real-life best practices and innovations presented by Betagro CEO and KU president, enriching the participants' understanding and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Now in its sixth series, the LDP-HEI by SEARCA and THF aims to empower leaders of HEIs in Southeast Asia by equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge required to lead their universities effectively, ensuring they thrive and remain resilient in the dynamic landscape of the region.

Nat’l Innovation Council Member Explores CLSU Innovations for Future Collaboration

Recognizing the innovations and research endeavors of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Dr. Ria Liza C. Canlas, Executive Member of the National Innovation Council (NIC) visited CLSU and met with the officials and faculty researchers for potential collaborations on May 8, 2024. Dr. Evaristo A. Abella, University President, welcomed Dr. Canlas and her team and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to partner with NIC enabling CLSU researchers to showcase their innovations and amplify its impact not only to the local community but to the whole country. Also present in the meeting are Dr. Edgar A. Orden, VP for Research and Extension, Dr. Jonathan V. Fabula, concurrent Director, University Research Program Office and Precision and Digital Agriculture Center, along with Freshwater Aquaculture Center Director, Dr. Karl Marx A. Quiazon, Center for Renewable Energy and Technology Director, Dr. Wendy C. Mateo, and Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management Head, Dr. Gella Patria L. Abella. After hearing all the innovative products like the Tilading, Tilapia Ice Cream, and initiatives on precision and digital agriculture, and use of renewable energy in agriculture, Dr. Canlas expressed her interest in collaborating with CLSU which will push the agenda of the government through the NIC in establishing a dynamic innovation ecosystem in the country. The NIC consists of 25 members, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as the Chairperson and NEDA Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan as the Vice-Chairperson is responsible for the implementation of the National Innovation Agenda and Strategies for 2023-2032.

CLSU Inks MOA with Korean Smart Farm for Ginseng Cultivation

Central Luzon State University (CLSU) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Korean Smart Farm Co. Ltd. together with Saemaeul Agricultural Production & Marketing Corporation (SAPAMCO) for a collaborative project entitled “Indoor Hydroponic Ginseng Cultivation, Food Product Development, and Technology Dissemination” on May 7, 2024. Dr. Edgar A. Orden, Vice President for Research and Extension, and Dr. Ariel G. Mactal, Vice President for Administration led the MOA signing ceremony along with Mr. Jin Yong Hwang, President of Korean Smart Farm Co. Ltd. and Mr. Jeong Taek Lee, President of SAPAMCO. Meanwhile, Dr. Jonathan V. Fabula, concurrent Director of the University Research Program Office and Precision and Digital Agriculture Center will lead the three-year project which aims to introduce the production, processing, and commercialization of ginseng as a high-value commodity that can provide a potential source of income to local farmers. The collaboration will harness the strengths of both parties in terms of expertise and capabilities to develop products such as tea, supplement drinks, and skincare products using ginseng as its main ingredient.
