CF, FAC Conduct Activity to Mitigate the Entry of Trash into the Ocean Ecosystem

Feb. 23, 2023

Ravelina R. Velasco | SCO

On February 14, 2023, the CLSU College of Fisheries (CF) and Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC) headed to Sabang Beach, Baler, Aurora province, a less than 3-hour drive from Nueva Ecija to conduct a clean-up activity on the shores of Sabang. This activity is in fulfillment of the commitment of CLSU through the CF and FAC to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with emphasis on SDG 14 Life Below Water (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development).  Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, SDG 14 Chair/College Dean and Dr. Karl Marx A. Quiazon, Director of FAC together with 53 faculty members, researchers, and support staff removed litter from the shoreline wherein a total of 13 trash bags were collected which composed mostly of plastic bottles, wrappers, and soda cans. Naturally-occurring debris like driftwood was seen along the shoreline. Beach clean-up is one of the ways in mitigating the entrance of plastics and other trash into the ocean, benefitting the ecosystem, and saving the seas and marine life from pollution. Prior to the clean-up activity, a courtesy call to the local government unit of Barangay Sapang was done. Sabang Beach is a two-kilometer strip of gray sand facing east of the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the birthplace of Philippine surfing.
