The Central Luzon State University (CLSU) conducted the first review meeting for the Sino-Philippine Joint Laboratory for Rice Technology Project with the Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JxAAS) on May 6, 2022, via Zoom.
The collaboration between CLSU and JxAAS dates back to 2019 which aims to establish a joint laboratory for rice technology and venture into high-quality rice breeding; performance evaluation of Chinese Rice Varieties under the Philippines’ climate conditions; resistance to insect, pests, and diseases; a showcase of new technologies; and evaluation of the agronomic, physicochemical and morphological characteristics of special-purpose rice germplasm.
During the program, President Edgar A. Orden highlighted and recognized the efforts of CLSU researchers and their JxAAS counterparts for their commitment to implementing the project despite the challenges brought by the pandemic. He also expressed his gratitude and hopes for the continuous partnership between the two institutions.
“We are hoping that this partnership will continue to build and strengthen our common specialized areas to help uplift rice R&D in both countries. The success of this joint project will benefit millions of farmers by providing them with alternative varieties that have the potential for higher productivity,” said President Orden.
Dr. Armando N. Espino Jr., VP for Research and Extension, and Dr. Maria Excelsis Orden, University Research Center Director led the CLSU team. Their counterparts who also joined the meeting were Prof. Xie Jinfang, JxAAS Vice President, Prof. Yin Jianhua, JxAAS Rice Research Institute Director, and Prof. Shen Xianhua, Deputy Director of JxAAS Department of Science and Technology Cooperation, together with the other JxAAS staff.
